Who's to blame?

Many issues have been caused by the production of apparel, including pesticides, soil erosion, and water pollution. Price Environmental Impacts states that six percent of the total pesticides used in the United States are used just on cotton fields. Another issue that Fashioning Sustainability talks about is the overuse of water in dye houses. Having enough clean water has become an issue in countries with a lot of dye labs. I think that the apparel industry must take responsibility for the issues it is creating by practices that can be altered in order to conserve natural resources. Also in Fashioning Sustainability, a simple change that would impact the amount of energy use is washing full loads of laundry at the lowest temperature. Just taking a little initiative can go a long way and if the apparel industry put some of these approaches into action, the ecosystem’s well-being would definitely see progression.

  1. Hey Jenny,
I like the way you directly stated issues that are happening within the fashion industry. The apparel industry does have a great impact on whether or not people know the facts behind these issues created by the production of apparel. Talking more about how the apparel industry can impact and alter their practices into more conservative ways with the usage of natural resources would strengthen your argument. Also, mentioning the reading by Walsh and Brown and how the costing methods impact this viewpoint would be something else that would help support the beneficial points you made. I agree that by taking just a little initiative, things can truly go a long way. If we put in the effort, we are surly to see a change for the good.

    1. Thank you for your suggestions, I also agree that examples of the things that would make an impact on the environment would help people realize the part they are playing in these issues.

  2. Hi Jenny,
I do completely agree with you that the apparel industry has a huge impact on whether we see progression or not. By them taking initiative, we could definitely see results. You made a good point when stating the amount of pesticide used on cotton and I do think that needs to be lowered because the amount of chemicals in apparel production has become dangerous. However, I do think that you could of included more examples of solutions from the readings to back up and strengthen your argument. Other than that, I think you made some good points about how simple changes can make an impact.

  3. Thanks Emily, both you and Amanda think more examples would make an impact on the reader, and I agree! I know for me that putting these issues into an everyday context would help people relate to the issues that we are dealing with.

  4. Hey Jenny,
I agree with you that we should definitely take some initiative to start making changes within our industry. I agree that just making small changes such as "washing full loads of laundry at the lowest temperature" would make an impact because if everyone began to change the way they do something, even something small, it would all total to make a larger difference. I would suggest you use just a couple more examples as they are always a great idea to help people like me, who are more visual learners, to better make sense of things and grasp your point of view on an argument, but other than that I think you did a wonderful job!

  5. Thank you, Chayla. Like you, I am also a visual learner and I also know a lot of the other students in our major are as well. After reading the other blogs, I now see that examples are the best way to help people understand these issues!
